So now i always build the food center building, so that i can forgot about food, and can focus on energy and research (and a bit of production). I used to always build research lab as the center building for every colony up to 5 colony then use the economist doctrine to slingshot research as early as possible, but now i consider that setup as not giving me high enough military growth by turn 25. It's not just for the yield, the production i need the military engineering guild for the production discount, i work the production slot as need, i mean my units producing cities just need certain amount of production to 2 or 3 turn every skirmisher and specialist (including their mods), then the rest of that city colonist will work a bit of research and energy and a little of food to none at all.

I always need production, and of course energy, we can never have enough of that. For example, my game almost always decided by turn 20-35, so happiness have significantly less impact than other yield types. In my experience, it all depends on map settings.
